For around $150 , you can get a Canon 420EX or a Sigma EF 500 DG ST flash.

Or get this one for around $249.

I think these are your only low end options.

What subjects do you want to make pictures of?

What's your budget?

We need answers to these before having hope of helping you choose a lens.

Consider renting lenses to try them out.

Disclosure: I am the owner of http://www.lenslenders.com in Canada.

First the Definitions (simplistic, not technical):

Telephoto - Single Focal Length Lens that can shoot at far distances 300mm 400mm etc. Whatever you see is what you can get, there is no "Zooming" or widening of the frame.

Telephoto Zoom - Lenses that can shoot at a range of distances within a single lens, so you can have a (fairly) wide angle and zoom in to subjects further away. They are typically not as sharp as Telephotos, but they are more versitile and generally cheaper.

What would probably suit you best would be a Telephoto Zoom lens such as the Tamrom 28 - 200 mm. lens. It is a single lens that will allow you to take regular shots but also the ability to zoom in on subjects at a distance. It runs about $285, but will cover most of your basic needs without needing to buy several different lenses or needing to swap lenses quite so often.

You might be interested in Canon's 100mm f/2.8 macro if you are taking photos of models as well as magazine shoots. Not only is the glass sweet at the macro setting, it takes beautiful portraits as well. I shoot with a Rebel XT too and have the kit lens (blech), a nice 20 mm, a 70-200 L (not IS though) and that 100 mm. I end up shooting with the 100 most of the time because I love how the world looks through it!

You can get it for about $600, I believe.

If you are creating work for a magazine and accepting payment for weddings I would suggest that you up the budget for your lens. Canon makes excellent glass. If you buy quality on the front end it will serve you well for years to come. Lenses are not the place to skimp....the old "garbage in...garbage out" thought comes to mind. If you are doing a wide range of photos I would suggest a 16-35mm L Canon lens. It is very sharp, very adaptable and will hold its value. Check the larger camera stores like B&H or Penn Camera to see what they're going for at the moment.

I'd suggest you look through trade magazines and talk to fellow professional photogs that you know. You can also talk to the people at the camera store. You could even check the canon website.

What lens do you currently have? Do you want a longer lens or a wide angle lens... what do you wish to do that you cannot do now? Speak with an experienced photographer and ask for some direction and advice.

Check with www.keh.com and www.bhphotovideo.com and see which lens is offered at a better price.

Let me warn you: there are a lot of shysters in the photography equipment selling business... I no longer do business with Adorama after witnessing a young salesman spitting on a lens and trying to wipe a scratch with the edge of his apron, and he tried to sell me a lens with a bent lens mount as being in near mint conditions. I will never recommend Tri-State to anyone; they have a reputation of being a Bait & Switch operation; they tried it with me, and after 3 months of waiting, I called yelled and demanded to speak with the manager, who of course "had stepped out;" I left my telephone number and someone called, asked if it was a law company and wanted to speak with the attorney, asked if he was an attorney, hanged up and my refund came in early next morning via overnight delivery; I never heard from the so-called manager. It was so coincidental that the same background noise was present on both calls!

I've never had issues with either keh.com or B & H; they are long-standing companies and they do not wish to tarnish their excellent reputations.

Since lenses usually outlast cameras (moreso today with digital cameras), I suggest that you save a bit of money (especially if it's coming from YOUR pocket) and get a good used lens from keh.com and you'll save money and will afford a better lens than if you bought new.

Just make sure you buy from a reputable place and puh-leeze do not fall for that old "We No Longer Have That Item But We Can Let You Have A Better One For The Same Price" routine... they're referring to a cheaper generic that might even be a floor model or a returned lens or even a repaired/refurbished lens or a Gray Market generic lens.

There are a lot of rip-off sites that originate in NYC; they have only a "warehouse" telephone, fax and even an "800" number and an Internet site but never a storefront address or a warehouse address where a potential buyer can see a face or view the merchandice... be leery (yes, I live in NYC).

I use Nikon equipment and I like the lenses put out by Nikon (called Nikkor) but I can tell you two things about Canon lenses, you have a huge selection of lenses and the quality of lenses is also very good. Don't skimp by getting a cheaper lens, skimp by getting a GOOD used lens from a reputable store instead.

Yeah, the 18mm on the kit lens is about as wide as you're going to get for any reasonable amount of money. If you $800 or so the 10-22mm isn't a bad choice.

Wider than?
The kit 18mm is pretty wide. Getting any wider than that will get expensive quick.
One thing you might try is take multiple shots of the area you want to cover and use the free canon photo stitch software to stitch all the photos together.
The key with this technique is to make sure the exposure is the same for all the photos. Find the desired exposure, then switch the camera to Manuel mode and set the exposure. Put the camera on a tripod and take multiple photos of the area you want. You don't just have to do this in "panorama", you can also take photos above and below, and when you stictch the photos together you can crop it.. This will essentially simulate an extreme "wide" angle shot...for free.
