I want to get more length out of my 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Lens for my Canon Rebel XT without buying a really expensive lens. So I thought I’d look for a telephoto converter but I don’t know which type to get because I’m not sure if there is a certain type I need to look for. Thanks in advance.

The other problem with converters is the affect on autofocus. I think most Canons need a maximum aperture of at least F5.6 in order to reliably autofocus. Even a 1.6 convertor on your 18-55mm will very quickly put you in a position when you zoom that your focus will not lock.
If you have a fix aperture lens with a maximum aperture of at least F4, you can use a converter.
A pretty nice, new Canon lens for your XT could be the 55-250mm. Check out some of the reliable online camera stores, like adorama and B&H photo. I think it is under $250.
Good Luck!!
None. There are no teleconverters on the market that I have used that give me satisfactory results when compared to using a telephoto lens. The teleconverter robs the lens of needed light and usually results in a "grainy" image or darker than I would like to have. Your best choice is to purchase a better quality telephoto zoom from Canon. I also own a Canon EOS Rebel and tried a friends teleconverter on my 18-55mm lens. I didn’t like it. I believe that the 2x teleconverter was around $100. but for around $250-300. you can find a decent Canon telephoto zoom. You won’t be disappointed in the results with the more expensive telephoto zoom lenses, even though they cost more money.
Get the best from Canon you can afford. Putting another lens in your optical path will do a couple things..
Your f/3.5 will become around a f/7.. your f/5.6 will now be around f/11 and this is with a 2x tele converter. If you find a 3x it will BE 3x worse..
Your 18~55 will now be a 36~110mm with a 2x .. A 3x will be 3x as much, in mm.
Your image quality will go down hill – fast – using most doublers, hence, buy GOOD..!
I would rather find a 70 to 300 my self.
