Mary asks…

Which is better Canon EOS 5D Mark II vs Canon EOS 7D for SPORTS action, etc?

I am trying to upgrade soon from my Canon EOD 30D. I just shot the 2010 Honda Battle of the Bands. Now it time for a change! I need something with a faster focus. I shot sports, marching bands and indoor events with BAD LIGHTING!!!!!

Hey,

The Dxo link above..well, I don’t trust them so much. Sometimes they’re accurate while sometimes I really don’t know how they got those numbers,.

If you want something fast and good for low light, you’ll gotta go with the 1D Mark IV

If you want something cheaper for sports, it’s the 7D. Its auto focus is much better than the 5D Mark II’s, there are also more cross-type focus points and there are many more AF options available. You can read my review here: http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2010/01/canon-eos-7d-review.html

The 5D Mark II is full frame, which means that in low light at higher ISO’s, you will get less noise. However, I think that its auto focus is enough good for some sports; not all.

Do you have an external flash? If not, buy one (430EX II or 580EX II) and your low light photographing will be much easier.

When you get out of film school both models will be obsolete,

if you must now, the 5d2 is my choice

Canon 7D vs. a Canon 5D Mark II vs. Panasonic GH1?

I need to buy a new camera, seeing how my old camera is now crap for falling ten stories cause i left it around a 5 year old. I know my fault. It is now worthless and way beyond repair.
I’m and independent film maker and out of the 3 cameras i have choosen, i really can’t decide. Which would you choose? and why?

In detail is good…
Thank you!!!

rob answers:

You are comparing a crop, full frame and a compact camera. That’s something totally different.

For video, I’d go with the 7D because of it’s frame rates and all you can choose. But it’s an APS-C camera, which means your (for example) 18-55mm “sees” what a 28-90mm would on a full frame. This is not good if you want to record wide a lot.

But the 5D Mark II is a Full Frame camera. It’s great, but you have only 30fps. If you can wait until March/April in 2010, when a new firmware for it will come (that enables 24, 25 and 30fps) then you should wait.

But if you want to start recording right now, go with the 7D.

Linda asks…

Which Camera is Better: Canon EOS 7D or Canon EOS 5D Mark II?

If not either of them, which would you recommend. It needs to have similar Mega Pixels and also be able to take 1080P video. Thanks in advance.

rob answers:

Since you’ve mentioned Canon, you probably shoot Canon already.

The 7D and the 5D2 are very very different animals, even though they are both of the same species. All out image quality is on the side of the 5D, but it’s not the fastest camera in the world. The 7D’s 8fps, wirelessly lit speedlite, HD video performance is probably a better all rounder, suitable for everything.

It may be worthwhile to consider the 1D4 if you can afford it, it’s what the 7D on steroids is.

With all these cameras you need a really good lens to go with it, the 5D works v. Well with the 24-70L and 24-105L but the APS-C on the 7D works better with the 16-35L., and you’ll probably also be looking at the 70-200′s depending on what you need. Remember that anything short of good glass then you may not get the advertised resolution.
